Contemporary Australia: Optimism | QLD | 15 Nov – 22 Feb 2008

The latest exhibition at the QLD Art Gallery encompasses many facets of contemporary Australian visual art and culture, the exhibition includes painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, video and video installation, cinema, animation, performance, music and comedy.

For ‘Contemporary Australia: Optimism’, the Children’s Art Centre presents interactive art works and projects created by a number of exhibiting artists especially for children and families. Spanning both levels of the Children’s Art Centre and beyond, the projects encourage children to explore and discover the fresh and imaginative ways that Australian artists consider their world.

Highlights include:
Thomas Meadowcroft Walk the car
A large-scale sound theatre introduces children to Thomas Meadowcroft’s experimental approach to music. Relating to his sound work Monaro Eden 2008 in the exhibition, children are invited to take a different car journey and create endless patterns and sequences of car sounds as they travel through the space.

Arlene Texta Queen Rides with the brides
Diners at the Galleries Cafe and Bistro can take part in a collaborative project featuring activities and imagery by the artist on tabletop sheets. With the artist’s medium of choice — the texta pen, children and families complete the pictures which make each tablecloth a unique collaboration.

Tony Albert Alien Nation Embassy
Tony Albert’s interest in aliens responds to both the alienation of Indigenous people within their own country and the ‘alien invasion’ of Australia by Europeans in 1788. Especially for kids, Tony Albert has created the Alien nation embassy and invites all earthlings to become honorary citizens — but not before passing the ‘citizenship test’! The multimedia installation features a population counter, video footage of the artist with the aliens, and electronic swipe cards for kids to access secret alien information.

Daytripper

Daytripper is my kind of book. A few years ago my sister and I decided to go to a new place once a month. We did it twice. And we’ve talked about it a lot ever since.Daytripper just may be the book to get us back on track again.

Daytripper contains 52 ‘great days out in the Sydney area’ and covers a diverse range of activities from animal parks to museums to gardens and walks and many other things beside. Each daytrip has a story of the authors experience, a historical look at the venue or area, a list of other activities in the area and a brief run down of the essentials (distance from CBD, costs, opening times, contact details etc).

It’s not a book you can read cover to cover but it is a book you can dip into from time to time and certainly refer to if you are looking for something to do in the Sydney area. The only down side I can see to it is that the information (opening times, costs etc) may not stay current for a long period, also the jolly tone of the author became a little annoying in large doses. But in small doses, which is how I think the book is intended to be read as it started as a newspaper column, it’s quite amusing and certainly inspiring me to get away from the house and the usual haunts now and then.

Sydney Design 2007

The 16 day Sydney Design 07 Festival is on at the Powerhouse Museum. The festival consists of exhibitions, film screenings, markets + more. The 11th international design festival runs from the 4 till the 18 August.

A special children’s event as part of the festival is Zoes House. Zoes House is an installation encouraging cooperative and creative play for 3-6 year olds. An unfinished house awaits cladding, surrounded by tools for budding builders – a crane, lifts, pulleys, conveyor belt, rubble chute, rail network, wagons, wheel barrows, even hard hats and jackets.
Zoe’s House was designed by La Cite des sciences et de l’industrie, Paris La Villette.

Also while you are there check out Berlin-based Japanese ‘performance jeweller’ Yuka Oyama set up her renowned Schmuck Quickies Salon (literally translated to ‘quick jewellery’).
